“Isn’t he a little old for you?”

“Why does this matter?” Emily asked.

“It tells me about your state of mind.”

“How?”

“It sounds like you’ve attached yourself to him the only way you could, by seeing him as a father figure. It’s understandable after the horrific things you’d been through.”

Emily closed down more and stared at the woman. She could tell she was making her angry, but she didn’t care.

“How about we stop for the day? I want you to think over everything we’ve talked about, and hopefully, you’ll do better next time. Remember, we don’t want to disappoint Mr. Warner. You have no idea how long you’ll be here, especially if you don’t cooperate.”

Emily ignored that for the time being.

“I have one more question,” Susan said.

“What?”

“I’m assuming you were raped repeatedly, and I’m concerned. Have you seen a doctor? You might have a venereal disease, and you’ll want to get that taken care of.”

The counselor said it in a gentle, concerned way, but it still made her angry. Emily stood and wrapped her arms around her waist. This woman was talking like it was no big deal, and it made Emily nauseous that she could be so blasé about it.

“I’ll be back in two days, dear.”

Emily didn’t say anything and watched the woman walk to Grey’s office door and knock. When she went in and closed the door, Emily raced up the stairs and hid in his room because the shaking inside was getting worse, and it felt like she was going to burst into a thousand pieces.
