The dress was white and lacy, shorter in the front, and dragged a bit in the back, making it look like a wedding dress.

“Your sisters and Beth will make a veil, so you’ll really look like a bride. Let’s go through these dresses and then go through the other closets. I remember seeing other dresses we might be able to use for bridesmaid dresses.”

“I’d like that.”

“You know, if they gave us just a bit more time, we could find real ones,” Aria said.

Angelica laughed and pulled out another dress. “I don’t know. I think this is kind of fun.” She held up a dress. “Mama, I have one that’s exactly like this one in my closet. Let me go get it to make sure.”

“All right, I’ll keep going.”

Angelica walked into her room and into her closet. Shepulled out several dresses, slung them over her arm, and walked out of the closet.

She bit back a scream when she saw Kenneth standing inside her room by the door.

“Oh, Kenneth. You scared me. Is there anything you need?” she asked.

He stared at her for a long moment. “No. I thought there would be something I could help you with.”

“Not at the moment. But thank you.” She felt like the air was being sucked out of the room as she walked around him and out the door.

When she got to her mother’s room, she turned to see him still standing in her doorway, watching her. She hurried into the room and shut the door.

“Is everything all right, dear?” her mother asked.

“Yes. It’s just stressful putting a wedding together in a few days.”

Aria laughed. “Hey, I think we’re getting good at it.”

Angelica relaxed and chuckled. “You’re right about that. Look what I found.”

Within the next hour, they had some samples of dresses they would take to the Macleans to show the girls and have them decide what they’d like to wear.

“I’m going to pack a few suitcases now, so I don’t have to worry about it later.”

“That’s a good idea, dear. I’ll keep looking for a dress for me.”

“You’ll look beautiful in anything you wear.”

“You are so sweet,” Aria said and hugged her.

Angelica walked down the hallway, glancing over her shoulder a few times for Kenneth. Once in her bedroom, she scanned the room before closing and locking the door behind her. She pulled down a few suitcases and laid them on her bed.

She had just turned back to grab some of her shoes and was startled to see Kenneth there again.

“You’ve got to stop scaring me.” She pressed her hand to her chest. “How did you get in here?”

“Did I hear right that you’re going to marry a Maclean bastard?”

She stiffened. “For one thing, he’s not a bastard. And for another thing, what I do is none of your business.”

“I’m making it my business.”

“Kenneth, please don’t.”

Kenneth opened his suit jacket to show her the gun he had strapped to his belt. “You need to come with me.”

“No.”
