It’s an entire paper on current events and how they help and hurt the global economy. Complete with sources and everything.

Seth worked on this while I slept.

I shut my eyes and smile.

Then I frown.

Wait. So Seth wants me to stay here atDSC?

Why?

Chapter 44

At the end of class, Professor Deckerd waits for me.

“Great paper, Miss Ruby,” he says.

“Jaci,” I say.

“Then you call me Paul,” he says.

“You liked my paper?”

“It was amazing,” he says. “A full look at the true global economy. It’s sometimes tough to look beyond the micro environment. You must have worked on this paper.”

“Explains why I haven’t been in class,” I say.

He grins. “That’s a good comeback. You still have a lot of work to take care of here.”

“Well, bring it on, I suppose,” I say. “I don’t want to lose my spot here. I’m… I’m sorry for not showing up like I should.”

Professor Deckerd holds up a hand. “I don’t need to jump on board your train of excuses. I know who you are. I can only guess what you must be thinking. And I get it. Wrangling in a bunch of people your age who are all tied to the biggest and most powerful crime families in the world…”

“Right,” I say.

“I expect results, Jaci,” he says. “You want to skip class? That’s fine. I’d rather you here to study the material. But if you hand in quality like this paper, how can I argue it? I’m not an enemy to you, Jaci. I want to see you succeed.”

“I believe you, Paul,” I say.

“Here’s something you missed,” he says. He hands me a folder. “It’s just a little introduction into microeconomic theory. I’d love for you to read the material, take the test, and then write me a three page paper. Give me your thoughts on supply and demand. Pick any topic. Run with it. Have fun.”

“Fun,” I whisper. “Sure.”

Paul laughs.

I finally leave the building and walk down the stairs.

A part of me wants to throw the folder to the ground and ignore it.

But I can’t do that.

In fact, I know what I have to do next.

I have to get in touch with Seth.

He wrote that first paper for me.

Seth has always been insanely smart. If he ever applied himself to anything, he’d master it in a second. He could be a doctor. A lawyer. He could be anything.
