My hips are still gently pumping, wanting more.

I reach for the shower and turn it back on.

I don’t even care that I’m still wearing a towel.

Chapter 51

Just as I hit theRECORDbutton on the home recorder that Cullen gifted me, Birdie opens the bedroom door.

She does a twirl and points at me.

I hit theSTOPbutton, take my headphones off, and stare at her.

“Were you busy?” Birdie asks.

“Trying to record.”

“Still?”

“I haven’t even started yet,” I say. “You keep making noise. Barging in. Then Maz yelled at you over some yogurt in the fridge.”

“She’s just pissy because it’s her time of the month,” Birdie says.

“I’m just trying to record something here,” I say.

“Did you write a love song for your guys?”

I sigh and rip the cords out of the recorder and start to pack it up.

“Oh, shit, Jaci, wait,” Birdie says. “I was just playing around. You don’t have to get mad.”

“I’m not mad. I’m going to find somewhere else to record.”

“No. Don’t.”

I stand up from the bed. “Look. If I’m going to record, I need it to be super quiet. You and Maz live here. It’s not fair to me or you two.”

“I feel like you’re mad.”

“I’m mad at everything.”

“Ut-oh. No sex or what?”

“That has nothing to with it.”

“Then what is it?” Birdie asks.

“What do you think it is? I can feel this stuff mounting, okay? I feel like something is going to happen. I’m closer to the truth yet I don’t feel it. And if I’m being honest. I’m tired.”

“Then take a nap,” Birdie says.

“Not that kind of tired.”

I pack up my guitar and my recorder.

Then Birdie decides to block the door.

“Just so you know, this is what the life is,” she says. Now she’s suddenly serious. “This is how it goes. You’re going to be tired. Really tired. You’re going to have a lot of decisions to make at once.”
