I begin to groan Faye’s name and I feel my eyes fill with tears.
This isn’t fair to Faye.
That’s what Marty wanted to tell me.
He wanted to warn me.
Something is going on.
Something really bad is going on.
Chapter 55
“Look what you did to me.”
Faye points to everything around the house.
There’s a hole in the ceiling.
Brown and yellow water drops from the hole.
It’s big enough to look up into.
I see the wrinkly nose of a mouse.
The mouse looks down at me.
“They’re everywhere,” Faye says. “Fucking mice everywhere.”
“I’m sorry, Faye,” I say. “I didn’t know. I still don’t know. How is this all tied to me?”
“You left me,” she says. “You took everything from me. Why am I even here? Why am I even alive?”
“Faye, stop it.”
I take a step and my foot breaks through the floor.
I jump back and see a hole in the floor.
“Everything is falling apart!” Faye yells. “You ruined everything in my life! Why the fuck did you show up on my porch? How was I supposed to just get rid of a baby?”
“I didn’t do it,” I say. “Faye… I swear…”
Something grabs my right ankle.
I look down and scream.
Marty is climbing out of the hole in the floor.
His face is twisted and bloody.
He’s broken.
His entire face is rearranged and broken.
“You’re supposed to be dead,” I say to Marty.
“I’m alive… I know everything…”
