I wonder why nobody says anything to me, but maybe whoever my family is knows what would happen to me.

Which then suggests that Archer is telling the truth.

That an uncle I never met killed one of Archer’s uncles.

Okay, that’s when things get tough for me.

I can bullshit myself into drinking, sleeping, laughing with Maz and Birdie, and flirting and kissing Cullen Doyle.

But sometimes the reality hits me and it feels like an elephant is sitting on my chest.

Today is one of those days.

When I jump down that rabbit hole…

I’m part of a mafia family.

It makes me want to scream and run away.

It makes me want to change my name.

But, wait, my name has been changed, right? There’s no way my real name is Jacine Ruby. That’s got to be fake, right?

Now the thoughts start to fuck up the rest of my day.

So much so that when I see Cullen at the end of the day, he grabs my hand and pulls me close to him.

“You have to come up toMakson Ridge, love,” he whispers into my ear. “You’re anHeir. You have to be there.”

“I’m not staying there,” I say.

“You have to show up.”

I look at Cullen.

I nod.

Cullen touches my cheek. “I’ll see you in a little bit. Trust me, you’re going to love this.”

He walks away.

I walk in the opposite direction and Maz and Birdie catch up to me.

I tell them I have to go toMakson Ridge.

I also tell them I’m not going up there alone.

We get a ride to the super-secret place where theHeirsall live.

And, fair enough, it’s a pretty wild house.

It’s an actual house.

A Victorian style house, dressed in black and gold, looking luxurious yet haunted at the same time.

I get such odd vibes from everything to do withDSC.

It has to be because I’m not used to this kind of life.
