“I think I have a handle on what happened already, but I need you to give me your version.”

“Sure. Shayne and Carter were running their mouths and called my girl a slut.”

Coach’s lips twitch, and he nods. “Yeah. I gathered that. The only new information here is that you have a girlfriend—the girl I requested be your tutor. That, I hadn’t heard.”

I look down for a second before meeting his gaze. “Yeah, well, it’s kind of new. To tell you the truth, I don’t know if she wants anything to do with me after this past weekend, including the tutoring. So, get ready for that.”

His brows raise a fraction. “Got anything else to say?”

I roughly scrub my fingers over my scalp. “Those assholes have been taunting her for a couple of weeks. I lost it. I’m sorry.”

“Fair enough. Sounds like they had it coming. If I didn’t think I’d lose my job, I’d have knocked a few of their teeth loose myself. No female deserves to be called a slut, no matter what she does.”

“That’s just it though. She’s—” I exhale harshly, not sure how to put what I feel into words. She’s everything. She’s the only one who understands me.

Coach nods. “Say no more. She seemed like a nice girl when I spoke to her. I bet she’s good for you.” He clears his throat. “So, speaking of. The scouts are coming soon. Your grades look good. Don’t fuck that up—whether she decides she still wants to help you or not.”

I shake my head. “No sir. I’ll try not to.”

“Don’t think I don’t realize that was all a bid for attention.”

My eyes snap to his as I’m overcome with embarrassment. I close my eyes and swallow. I give a short jerk of a nod when I reopen them.

“Get the hell out of here, Robertson.”

“Yes sir.”
