“What?” His mind is clearly muddled by what I’ve already done. I sink down to my knees in front of him, and he throws his head back, looking to the sky. “Fuck, this is hot.”

“I’m going to need you to look at me, Xander. Just like I watched you eat me.” I flick my tongue over the tip, tasting him, then take the crown of his cock into my mouth and suck gently, swirling my tongue around. A bolt of lust zings down my spine.

He makes a raspy noise in the back of his throat and puts one hand on the back of my head. “Fuck, Scarlett. More.”

Glancing around, and unable to see anything but hedges and flowers beyond the big tree we are behind, I continue, taking him deeper into my mouth and loving the way he groans when I do. I work in a steady rhythm, moving my hand in time with my mouth.

Xander swears under his breath. His cock hits the back of my throat a couple of times, and my eyes water. His dark eyes glitter in the sunlight as he looks down at me. “Scarlett—fuck, yes.” He begins to thrust, out of control, and I let him, grabbing his ass cheeks in my hands. “Fuck, baby. I’m going to come.” He tries to pull away, but I won’t allow it. I want all of him. I grip his ass harder as he jerks, his lower abs tightening. He finds his release inside my mouth with a groan that anyone in the vicinity would definitely hear.

I swallow, then run my tongue over him one final time before I release him. I can’t believe I just did that—wejust did that. He puts his hands under my arms and lifts me, then quickly yanks up his pants, tucking himself back inside. We stare at each other for what I swear is a full minute, chests rising and falling. It’s as if we’re both trying to figure each other out.

Just as I’m getting nervous that I’ve done something wrong, Xander’s arms dart out and tug me to him, his hand cradling my head against his chest. I feel his lips in the hair at the top of my head before I look up. He slides his thumbs under my eyes, wiping away the tears that had collected on my lower lashes and at the outer corners. His mouth covers mine, tongue sweeping inside. He moans, running his thumbs over my cheeks.

He finally breaks the kiss, and I look up at him, surprised by his tortured expression.

“Was that not okay? Did I do it wrong?”

A chuckle rumbles from his chest. “Fuck no. That was perfect. You’re perfect.”

As we collect our things, though, I can tell his mind has wandered away from me again. I don’t understand why, and he’s not talking.

It scares the shit out of me.

Chapter 42

Xander and I part ways when we head back into the cafeteria, and after eating a salad and downing a bottle of water, I make a run to the bathroom before the bell rings for our next class.

I’m quietly doing my business, pondering what I’d just done with Xander when the door opens. There’s whispering outside my stall, so I finish up and flush. I open the door and don’t even glance toward the small circle of girls huddled together before I cross the room to wash up. While I’m wiping my hands on a paper towel, I turn around, and the hair on my neck instantly stands on end.

Aria and her cheer bitches watch me, nasty expressions on each and every face. I don’t know what I’ve done to the rest of them, but it’s clear Aria isn’t handling the budding relationship between me and Xander very well. I shift to the side to go around them, but she catches me by the shoulder, laughing. “You know he’s just using you, right?”

“Whatever.” Her purpose in confronting me like this in front of her friends is probably to make herself feel better, but I’ll stand my ground. I cross my arms in front of me, pressing my lips together. Can’t show fear in front of this bitch, that’s for sure.

“He told me he’s going to dump you as soon as he gets what he wants.”

“Which is what?” I raise a brow, blood flowing into my face, making it hot. I’d hate to think Xander’s been talking to Aria about me, but—

She scoffs. “Well, I’m guessing it hasn’t happened yet since he’s still with you. He’s a fuckingguy,Scarlett. It’s not like he’s going to hang around after you give it up.”

There are a few snickers from the other girls standing with her. My eyes flicker around to them, taking note of exactly who is miserable enough to join Aria in taunting me like this.

She uses a sickly-sweet voice when she speaks again. “I’m just trying to save you from the heartache of it all, Scarlett.” She gives me a smug little grin. “I’m trying to be your friend, if you’ll let me.”

I step toward her. “I haven’t believed a word out of your mouth since the minute I met you. Why the hell would I start now?”

She shrugs. “Has he even taken you home to meet his mom and stepdad yet?”

I try so hard not to let what she’s just said bother me, but it does. It’s like a slap in the face and a bucket of cold water all at once, because she’s right. I have no idea where Xander lives or anything about the people who currently reside there with him—except Janie. My hands start to shake.

“Uh-huh. I see I’ve got you there. Come on, girls, let’s leave her to cry her sad little tears in peace.”

When I finally exit the bathroom a few minutes later, I’m late to class. As I hurry down the hallway, I skid to a stop outside Mr. Harrigan’s door. I’d forgotten that Aria and Xander have US Government together after lunch on even days. I can’t help but stand and stare as Aria presses herself up against Xander. She whispers in his ear, a grin tipping her lips when she sees I’m watching. She grazes her lips over his jaw.

I don’t stick around for more.

I close my eyes, knowing that Aria is a vindictive bitch. If I’ve learned anything at all, it’s that she could totally be fucking with me.

Even so, my hands are trembling so badly I’m embarrassed to go to my next class, so I jog down to the nurse’s office. I give a tap with my knuckles to her door. “Excuse me, Mrs. Jansen. I’m not feeling well. I have study hall this period. Can I lie down for a little while?”
