Page 28 of Simon Says… Run

He groaned. “Simon again?”

She replied, “Not in total, but one vision he had was about another runner.”

“Anotherrunner?”

She nodded grimly.

“You’re not talking about a serial killer or some copycat killer who’s waiting to strike again, right?” he asked in a sharp tone.

“Well, I hope not,” she stated, “but you know as well as I do that only time will tell.”

“No, no, no. I don’t want any more of these cases.”

“I wish,” she whispered. “I really do, but there’s no way to know yet.”

“Then get to the bottom of it, fast. The last thing we need is another killer running around, picking off people at will.”

“Got it.” She hurried back to her desk. There she called Jenna’s ex-husband again, and surprisingly she got him this time and identified herself. “I need to speak with you.”

“Fine,” he snapped into the phone. “I didn’t kill her. I’m not all that upset that she’s dead, but I didn’t kill her.”

“Then you won’t have trouble telling me that to my face, right?”

“Of course not.”

“Good. Then come on down to the station, and we’ll talk here.” And, with that, she gave him a time and added, “Don’t be late.”

When she hung up, Rodney looked over at her. “Was that the ex?”

She nodded. “Yeah, I figured it might put him off balance a little bit if we met with him in this setting.”

“Let’s hope it doesn’t put him on edge so much that he shows up with a lawyer, and then we don’t get jack.”

“He might,” she agreed. “That also says something about him, if he does.”

“Only that he’s more aware of the law than a lot of people. And it doesn’t take much to think that somebody so soon after a bad divorce is a potential murder suspect,” Rodney added.

She looked over at him. “How are your cases going?”

“Still just waiting on the tox screen for the one, but I’ll help Lilliana on hers,” he told her. “But, any time you’re ready for a hand, let me know.”

“I will,” she said. “So far, this is just a case of running around and crossingTs and dottingIs, until something doesn’t add up.”

“So far?”

“Yeah, so far.” She gave him a grim smile. “Let’s hope I get something sooner rather than later.” She got up and headed over to the coffee room, where she poured herself another cup. She stood here, staring out at the city from the window. And then she got another phone call. She looked down at her phone and noted it was the ex-husband.

“I came in early,” he stated briskly. “I’m at the station.”

“Good, I’ll meet you up front.”

As she headed down, she called out to Rodney, “The ex-husband just showed up.”

“Came in early, huh? That’s a good sign,” Rodney noted.

“Depends on whether he’s trying to confess or not,” she quipped, tossing him a smile.

“Not likely. He’s just trying to be cooperative.”
