Kate walked intoher office, poured herself some coffee, and made some calls. She knew Agnew wouldn’t be happy, but, when she found out he was being released from the hospital, she wanted him to come into the station for questioning. Rodney sat beside her in the bullpen, sipping his own coffee. She looked at him. “Any luck with your case?”

“Yep, the two on Hastings Street are taken care of.”

“What was it?”

“A dispute over drugs.”

She winced. “That sounds very familiar.”

“We never run out of reasons to kill each other in this world,” he quipped. “Particularly when drugs are involved.”

She nodded.

“What about you?”

She filled him in on what she’d found out from Charlie.

“Wow.” Rodney stared at her for a long moment. “Nowthatis one hell of a motive.”

“Well, it’s a motive, and, of course, the attempted suicide also adds a potential look of guilt,” she noted, “but I want him to come in for a more formal questioning phase.”

“Sounds good to me. I’d like to watch, if you don’t mind.”

“That would be great,” she said, “since our impressions will be huge here.”

“Because you don’t have any evidence?”

“What evidence can I have? We have nothing forensically. He tried to commit suicide, but a lot of people would put that down to grief or any number of other confused emotions.”

He nodded. “You really need a confession.”

“And I don’t know that I’ll get it,” she stated, facing him. “Agnew couldn’t even talk about the suicide.”

Rodney winced at that.

“I know, right? And, with my luck, he’ll come in with a lawyer in tow.”

“I wouldn’t be at all surprised. If he talks to anybody at all, you know that’ll be the first thing they recommend.”

“Since when did the public become so aware?”

He stood, laughter bursting out. “Cop shows of course.”

“But they get it wrong all the time,” she said good-naturedly.

“Yeah, but they don’t get all of it wrong, and those are the things that the public seems to pick up on pretty fast.”

She groaned. “I know.”

“Still, it’s minor compared to the rest of the things you’ll need in order to lock down the case.”

“I know,” she agreed, “but, somewhere along the line, things are supposed to start going our way.”

“Only when we have a way to prove it.”

“And that’s what I’m up against,” she declared.

“I just don’t get why he would kill the two of them?”
