“There’s an odd look to you today.”

“I just met a character, just came away from her place. She was an older woman, somebody who makes you think a little bit more about life. But sometimes maybe we shouldn’t be thinking a little bit more about life, at least not according to what I heard from her.”

He raised his eyebrows, and she still smiled. As he listened to Kate talk about the older lady, he started to laugh along with her. “Oh boy, it’s not exactlyfiberwe want to think about. But you know something? I remember my old gran talking about it too.”

“I think it becomes something they almost hover over,” she murmured.

He chuckled. “And she’s right. We should be doing more to live each day, shouldn’t we?”

“Well, I thought yesterday was pretty darn good living,” she murmured.

He smiled. “I’m glad that held you over for a while.”

“It was great,” she murmured. “I wouldn’t mind doing it again.”

“We can do it again,” he stated instantly.

When he looked around, she added, “We don’t have to do it today by any means.”

“Good, because I don’t even know how I would manage to move any of this.”

That’s when she lifted her nose in the air. “Oh my God, is that steak?”

He laughed. “I love that you’re a red meat eater.”

“I think everybody should be,” she declared, and then she frowned. “Yet I also understand the philosophy behind the vegetarians and vegans.”

“It’s just that you don’t love it enough to become one.”

“No, I really love my protein,” she murmured.

“Well, protein can be gotten in a whole lot of other ways.”

“Yeah, and a whole lot offiber,” she added, with an eye roll.

He burst out laughing. “Come on. It’s almost ready.”

He poured her a glass of red wine, then handed it to her and said, “Everything is out at the barbecue.”

He led the way onto the balcony, and she immediately crashed onto one of the big lounges. “You know what? If you had a pool here, it would be absolutely perfect.”

“I know. I was thinking about that. You’ve mentioned a pool a couple times.”

“This is still pretty special. You won’t get this view just anywhere.”

“No, but a lot of good view locations are in Vancouver,” he murmured.

She nodded. “Still, it’ll be a lot of money.”

“Yeah, it is. That’s what real estate is all about though.” She nodded and closed her eyes. He watched her for a few moments. “Tough day?”

“Yeah, tough day,” she agreed, “and a shitty day and still not getting anywhere. What do you think about what she said about the husbands and their wives?”

“I think she’s right. I think it’s about them. Apparently plenty of people hated those women individually—or at least were disgruntled by their behavior.”

“Yeah. I can see motive, but I haven’t been able to lock down any suspect. I mean, both husbands were the obvious suspects, right? Barry admitted to having no alibi. And Agnew would have had to leave his kids alone to do the deed. And he didn’t even know that his wife had caused his accident way back then, not until I talked to him today.”

“What do you mean, he didn’t know?”
