“You’re welcome. Can we please fly now?” she asked with excitement in her voice.

“Yes, my little one. We can fly now. Hold on tight,” he commanded, lifting her into his arms.

“I won’t let go.”

Emmy didn’t close her eyes when they stepped out of the lair into midair. Not even for a second. She wanted to see everything there was to see. Kingston held her tightly and tried to shield her as best as he could from the wind, but she wasn’t bothered by it. Quite the opposite. She was exhilarated by the entire experience, just as she had been before.

The night lights danced on the ground as they flew high above. She had no idea where he was taking her, and she really didn’t care. There was zero doubt in her mind that he knew exactly where he was going. After all, he had been flying these skies his whole life.

She could easily see why he loved living on the island. Even under the cover of darkness, the sights lit by the moon were incredible to see from their vantage point.

Kingston started to descend just past the brightness of the city lights. She could only imagine what the people on the ground would think if they were to look up and see a huge dragon carrying a woman. She giggled at the thought alone.

“Thank you for this. It’s so amazing,” she yelled, unsure if Kingston could even hear her.

“You’re welcome, my little human.”

Emmy could feel the ear-to-ear smile that spread across her face. Her heart was full. She couldn’t imagine any adventure that would have or could have been as grand as flying with her own personal dragon.

CHAPTERTWENTY-ONE

“Shit! Shit! Shit! Fuck!” Kingston said to himself. He had been enjoying the short flight back to his city home with Emmy in his arms when he felt the presence of several of his brothers. He could tell exactly who was approaching him from where he was, and this wasn’t the time to find out. He was outnumbered three to one, if not more. Not to mention that. Emmy was in his arms.

“Hold tight, my love. Other dragons are approaching, and I don’t want them to catch up with us.”

Flapping his wings harder and faster, he slipped between two large buildings before quickly turning back-to-back corners and coming to a quick landing just outside of his main residence.

More than anything, he had wanted to take his time and let Emmy enjoy the night lights from above. But he couldn’t take any chances. If Stryker or Archer tried to engage him in any way when he was in the air with his mate in his arms, things would not turn out in his favor.

He could easily beat either of them or both together. Just not with his all too human mate in his arms. Choosing that moment to start a fight would have amounted to him signing her death warrant, and that was something he would never do. She was far too important to him. He would protect her at all costs. Especially since he knew Stryker had already tried to harm them by tampering with his plane.

The second his feet touched the ground, he shifted back to human form and set Emmy on her feet. “Shhh.” He placed one finger over his lips and quickly entered the security code to his back door. The second the door popped open, they slipped inside.

“Sorry. I didn’t know which of my brothers was following us, and I didn’t want them to have the chance to catch us. Normally, I’d go out and see what was going on, but I didn’t want to do that with you in my arms. It would be too risky if someone wanted to start some shit,” he said, flipping on a light.

“Thanks. I love flying with you like that. I mean, seriously. It’s like one of the best things ever, but I have the very distinct feeling that it wouldn’t be much fun, and I would not enjoy it at all if you were trying to fight midair while you’re holding me. That would suck. Big time.”

“Yes, it would. I won’t risk your life to appease my asshole brothers.”

“Where are we?” she asked, peeking around his shoulder.

“Sorry. This is my house. It was the quickest to get to. We can drive back to the hotel. It’s safer that way until I figure out what is going on and who is trying to stop our mating and me being king.”

“Do I get the grand tour?” she asked.

“Sure. If you want one.” He didn’t know why he hadn’t asked her. He had just assumed that she wasn’t interested or wouldn’t be. He was glad to see he was wrong about that. Emmy was surprisingly interested in every part of his life. Her natural curiosity was unexpected and awesome at the same time. The fates couldn't have chosen or created a better mate for him, as far as he was concerned.

“Of course, I want to see where you live. Why wouldn't I?” she asked with a smile.

God, he loved the way her eyes lit up and the way her lips turned upward in that perfect crooked smile of hers. He had never met a more beautiful woman, a more perfect woman.

Just as Kingston was getting ready to show Emmy his house, there was a knock at the back door. Emmy jumped out of her skin at the sound.

“It's all right, babe. It's just Jace,” Kingston said as he opened the back door.

“Brother, come in. We just got here.” Kingston stepped out of the way to let Jace in.

“I know. I was watching from a distance when I saw you guys land. I don't know if you know, but Stryker and Archer were on your tail. You seem to have lost them when you dove between the buildings. That was some quick thinking on your part. I don't know what they would have done had they caught up with you, and I'm glad you didn't stick around to find out. I've had a few of my people following them all day but haven't heard anything back yet. I'll let you know as soon as I do. I just wanted to make sure that you and Emmy were okay.”
