Page 91 of Meant to Be

Our eyes are locked on each other as he sucks on the cube, before crunching it between his teeth.

“I feel better now,” I tell him. “Thanks.”

I turn from him, but he grips my wrist, stopping me.

“Josie.”

“Hmm?”

“I’m going out with Jess tonight.”

My back straightens as I face him, suddenly losing the flirty smile from my face.

“I did it because of this morning,” he mutters, eyes on the ground. “Seeing you with Nick pissed me off.”

“Do you want to go out with her?”

Harley exhales. “No.”

“Then you shouldn’t.”

“Do you want to go out with Nick?” he questions.

It’s my turn to lean against the wall. I think for a moment.

“I did.”

“You did?”

I shrug. “Things have changed.”

“Or they’re the same as before,” Harley says. “Nick isn’t what you want.”

“What do I want?”

“Me.”

Suddenly he’s right in front of me. I inhale his scent and feel the heat seeping into me through his shirt. He plants his palms against the wall, his arms caging me.

“It’s always been me.”

His eyes drop to my lips and I’m so heated, I could drip into a pool on the floor.

“But you don’t want me,” I whisper. “You don’t care for me.”

“Why do you keep saying that?” He growls, anger in his voice.

“You wouldn’t have done what you did.” I close my eyes. “You destroyed me, Harley. And I can’t forgive you.” I slip out from under his arms, forcing myself to create distance between us. I can’t do this again. It’s too little, too late. “Go out with Jess. She will be good for you.”

“What’s good for me is you.”

I shake my head. “You don’t know that.”

“Neither do you,” he says.

I’m flustered by the time I get back to the table, wondering how long I was gone for. Sam’s face is a little pale as he stares at me.

“What?” I ask, wondering if he somehow saw what happened in the hallway, until I see my phone in his hand.
