“But I’m not here to question you about Claire’s death, since I know you’re not even remotely involved. I wanted to talk to you about what you and Claire discussed during her visits.”

“I don’t see how our conversations could be of any help.”

“Sometimes it’s the smallest thing that helps crack a case. So anything you can tell me about your visits with Claire could be useful. Her behavior. Demeanor. What you discussed. Anyone else who may have been aware of her time with you.” He raised a brow. “It’s my understanding you’ve amassed quite a following of female fans, many of whom would probably love to be able to spend the time with you Claire was allowed. Perhaps this was the work of one of them. Trying to get your attention by committing a crime similar to what you once did.”

Domenic studied John for a beat, seeming to consider his request. Then he relaxed his posture. “Okay, Special Agent. I’m willing to help you. I’ll happily share everything I learned about Claire Hale over our rather enlightening visits. But in exchange, I need you to help me.”

“You’re serving a life sentence without the possibility of early release. I can’t do anything to change that. This isn’t an official visit anyway. Just an…informal inquiry. I don’t have many strings available to pull, so to speak.”

“That’s true.” That same, conniving smile curled Domenic’s mouth once more. “But I do believe you have at least one string you can pull… So to speak.”

“What’s that?”

Domenic leaned across the table, eyes cold, expression hard. “I want to see my wife.”
