I expelled a long breath. “Okay, kid. Here’s what we’re going to do. First, I’m going to call your mum to tell her you’re over here and are safe.”

Her expression fell as she groaned. “Do you have to? She’s going to be pissed. I told her I was going over to my uncle Wes’ house, since I knew she’d never let me ride all the way out here on my own.”

“And for good reason.” I crossed my arms in front of my chest, giving her a stern look. “You crossed several busy intersections. All it would have taken was one shithead texting while driving and that would have been it. If anything happens to you, it would destroy her, Imogene.”

Giving me an annoyed glare, she held out her hand. “That’ll be five dollars.”

“For what?”

“Swearing.”

“Your mum only gives you a dollar.”

“My mom doesn’t have a five-year, $100 million contract pitching for one of the best professional baseball teams around right now. You can afford it, Hale.”

I mumbled, but reached into my pocket and opened my wallet. “Lowest I’ve got is a twenty. Got any change?”

She grabbed the bill out of my hand, shoving it into her back pocket. “Let’s call it even. So, what’s the plan after you tattle on me?”

“You know how to bake, right?”

She scoffed. “Of course I know how to bake.”

“Good. Because I’m going to need your help.”

“I’ll say.”
