Chapter Fifteen

King thought the first week passed too quickly, but he was pleased with the progress being made with the house and his relationship with Cat.

She was letting him touch her and kiss her all the time, and he was just waiting for any sign that she wanted to go further. As much as his body screamed for hers, he wasn’t going to pressure her.

Corey’s room was painted, and all the new furniture was delivered and in place. The few times Cat had been in the room, she would sigh, look at him, and shake her head because there were more toys or something he’d gotten his son.

“You’re going to spoil him.”

“I hope so,” King said. “We’ll keep him grounded, too, so don’t worry. I really enjoy doing this.”

Corey was begging to sleep in his bed because it looked like a car, and that night, Cat had agreed to try it.

“I want you to see this,” King said when they were in Corey’s room.

“What is that?”

“It’s a video security device. You can have one of the modems by your bed or carry it with you, and you’ll be able to see Corey all the time. You’ll also be able to hear him.”

“Oh, that’s amazing.”

“It will help soothe your fears a little?”

“Oh, a lot.”

“I’ve also had a door alarm put on his door. I’ll show you the button you use to set it every night. It will send you a signal if the door opens.”

He could see her visibly relax, and it pleased him that he’d gone an extra step to make her feel secure.

When it was time for bed, both adults got him bathed, read a story, and then he watched her breastfeed him until Corey fell asleep. Then King lifted him into his bed and covered him up. A nightlight in the bathroom gave off plenty of light so he wouldn’t get scared if he woke up.

King started the alarm, then wrapped an arm around her waist. “Do you want to go into the small family room off of my room and watch a movie?” he asked.

“Are you sure you don’t have work to do?”

“No, I don’t. I’ve delegated a lot of work to people I trust in my company.”

“And you don’t mind that?”

“Not at all. I should have done it a while ago.” He wasn’t going to say it was all he had to live for after he’d pushed her away.

He made sure there was a monitor next to the sofa and handed her the remote. “Find what you want to watch while I get us a drink. White wine okay with you?”

She nodded. “Yes, it sounds wonderful.”

They sat next to each other, sipping their drinks and watching the suspense movie she picked, and he couldn’t get over how right it felt, as though they’d done it a hundred times before.

“I’m going to stop breastfeeding,” she said suddenly.

He looked at her. “I’m good with whatever you decide. I think it’s amazing you’ve been able to go this long.”

“There’s nothing as healthy as breast milk, so I wanted to give it to him as long as I can, but I can feel that my milk isn’t coming in like it used to.”

“I know we’re not being intimate yet, and this might sound weird, but I would like to try the milk.”

“How?” she asked.

“Would it be wrong to take it from your breast as Corey does?”
