“Play something,” Maz says.

I hold the guitar and gently strum the strings.

They’re such clean strings. The sound is deep and powerful.

My left hand touches the neck of the guitar and I finger some chords and strum with the fingernails of my right hand.

“That’s amazing,” Birdie says.

“I’m not playing anything,” I say. “Just messing around.”

“Kind of like what Cullen wants to do between your legs,” Maz says.

I quickly stand up and place the guitar in the case. “I can’t accept this.”

“You already did,” Birdie says. “You opened the case and played it. It’s yours now.”

“I’m giving it back to him,” I say. “I don’t want to owe anyone a thing.”

“Jaci,” Maz says. “You’re royalty around here now. You’re a femaleHeir. In all reality, you own our ass. Anything you want Birdie or me to do, we have to do it.”

“Someone get me a coffee then,” I say.

Without hesitation, Maz and Birdie both jump up and go to get me some coffee.

I don’t even tell them to stop.

I’m… amazed.

I’ve never been important ever in my life.

Now I’m considered mafia royalty to a family I don’t know…

Maz hands me a cup of coffee. “Here you go.”

“Never do that again,” I say.

“We have to,” Birdie says.

“No,” I say. “Also, I am not sleeping anywhere near theHeirs.”

“You have to,” Maz says.

“Fuck the rules,” I say. “That’s what I said to Cullen. And I’ll say it to anyone I want.”

“You’re kind of a badass,” Birdie says. “I can see that edge you were born with showing.”

“I earned this edge,” I say. “From the way I was brought up.”

“Then use it,” Maz says. “You have to use it. You’re anHeir. You have power over Archer. He chose to be aSavage.”

“And if he does kill you, it will start a big war,” Birdie says.

“What does that even mean?” I ask. “Big war.”

“It’s not the kind you read about in history books,” Maz says. “It’s a different kind. It’s bad though. Really bad.”

“Families or whatever?” I ask.
