Page 54 of Meant to Be

“I just wanted to clear the air. About Nick.”

I snatch at a packet of chips and drop it into the basket, gripping the handle a little too aggressively. A pulsing headache has formed behind my eyes and the last thing I want to do is to be here right now, let alone withher.

“Nothing to clear.”

“Well. There is,” she says awkwardly. “We were … kind of … seeing each other.”

“Take it up with him if you have a problem,” I huff, brushing around her. I don’t look up the entire time, and I throw my items onto the conveyor belt before she can reply. I’ve paid, and I’m out the door within a minute. Guilt gnaws at me, for everything I’ve done, and I grit my molars, trying not to crack.

It’s quiet. A startling, still quiet, at my tiny house. I pack the things away and throw myself onto the lounge, burying my face into the pillow. When my eyes close, I see him. Harley. I feel his hands cupping my face, those stunning eyes piercing into me. Those luscious lips tilting into a smile. His voice filters into my mind as if he’s here right now, murmuring in my ear.

“It won’t always be like this,”he whispers.“Things will get better. You’ll see.”
